The minimum age of a driver is 18 years. Children must be at least 10 years of age to sit in the front seat. Those under 10 years must be seated in the rear and seatbelted or in a child seat. All passengers are required to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limitis 0.5‰.

A flashing red light means “Do not enter”; flashing amber means “Caution”; flashing yellow arrows mean “Yield”.

Broken centre lines on the road are indication of a section where passing is allowed. Where three or five lanes exist, the middle one should be used for passing by traffic going both directions. A double-thick white line designates the mandatory slow lane.

Do not park where the curb is painted yellow. Parking on the left side of the street is allowed on one-way streets only. On darks streets, parking lights must be left on. Pay-and-display machines are widely used. Illegally parked vehicles may be wheel-clamped or towed.

Road Tolls

The majority of motorways in France have tolls. Tickets are issued at the entrance to the motorway and can be paid for with any major credit card. The amount of the payment depends on the distance you are travelling as well as on the type of your vehicle. Trunk roads do not have tolls.
