About Rostock
Rostock is situated in the north of Germany at the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the largest German Baltic Port, being the Baltic gateway to Germany and Europe. The fact that Rostock has been closely associated with the sea is evidenced by the exhibitions in the Marine Museum.
Despite severe war damage, many of Rostock’s historic old buildings have survived. The architecture of the Hanseatic times is mixed with that of later styles. The many attractions in the city include the elegant burghers’ houses in Thalmann Square, the 15 th century Town Hall and the late Gothic St. Mary’s Church with its old astronomical clock.
Rostock boasts the oldest university in Northern Europe as well as the biggest zoo on the Baltic coast.
