Roscommon Car Rental Guide
This page gives you information about car rental in Roscommon and also gives a short overview of the basic car rental and driving restrictions valid in Ireland.
Rental Restrictions
To rent a car in Ireland, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 2 years. Drivers age 23 and under and over the age of 70 may incur an additional fee locally. The maximum age for rentals is 79.
Cars rented in the Republic of Ireland can be taken to Northern Ireland free of charge as long as the renter does not hold a Northern Ireland driving license.
Driving Restrictions
In Ireland, driving is on the left and overtaking on the right. The minimum age of a driver is 17 years old. Unless the seat is equipped with a child restraint, children must be at least 12 to sit in the front. Seatbelts must be worn at all times. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.8‰.
The use of horns in towns is prohibited between 11.30 pm and 7 am. You may only use foglights in fog or falling snow.
When parking, all restrictions for parking are lifted after 6 pm, except where there are yellow lines on the road and within a bus stop area. A double yellow line means No parking at any time. Pay-and-display machines are common throughout Ireland. There are large fines for dangerous parking and your car may also be wheelclamped. Fines for parking violations may be collected on the spot. A parking disc allows for one to three hours of parking. Do not park where there are yellow lines on the roadside.
In order to catch traffic violators, speed cameras are used all over Ireland.
