Rental Restrictions

Cars rented in Croatia cannot travel into the following countries: Albania, Africa, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic*, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia*, Slovakia*, former Soviet Union, Turkey, former Yugoslavia.

Travel into countries marked by an asterisk (*) can be arranged for certain categories of cars.

Driving Restrictions

The minimum driving age is 18 years. Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front. All passengers are required to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 ‰. Drunken driving can lead to the confiscation of the driving license and severe fines.

Traffic is on the right and cars entering a roundabout have the right of way. School buses have the right of way when leaving a stop. Do not drive on tram lines and do not pass a bus when passengers are getting on or off.

When driving, you must have your headlights on at all times. The use of horn is only allowed in cases of extreme danger.

You are not allowed to use a mobile phone while driving unless you have a hands-free system.

There are metered parking areas in many cities.

The police has modern equipment to catch traffic violators and they are also authorised to collect fines on the spot.

Road Tolls

Toll is payable on a number of highways and road tunnels. There is a toll on the E59 and E70 highways that lead out of Zagreb. You can pay in cash only.
