Driving Restrictions

The minimum age of a driver is 18 years. Children must be at least 10 years old to sit in the front. If younger than that, they must be seated in the rear and seatbelted or in a child seat. All passengers are required to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰.

A flashing red traffic light means “Do not enter”, flshing amber light means “Caution”, flashing yellow arrows mean “Yield”. When you pass bicyclists, you must give them a clearance of at least one metre.

Broken centre lines on the road indicate a section where passing is allowed. If there are three or five lanes, the middle one must be used for passing by traffic. A double-thick white line indicates the mandatory slow lane.

Pay-and-display machines are very common in France. Unless otherwise dictated, parking is free of charge from 7 pm to 9 am and on weekends, public holidays, and in August.

Road Tolls

In France, the majority of motorways have tolls. You receive your ticket when entering the motorway and can pay for it with any major credit card. The payment depends on the distance you are driving and also on the type of your vehicle. Trunk roads do not have tolls.
