About Mechelen
Mechelen was founded in the early Middle Ages and is the religious capital of Belgium: the Archbishop of Belgium resides there. Although the city was badly damaged in the World Wars, it has managed to preserve many interesting and beautiful old buildings. St. Rumbold’s Cathedral, the former Palace of Margaret of Austria and the Town Hall are just a few of them.
Mechelen is home to several interesting museums and a brewery. The centre of the city is a low-traffic area, making Mechelen a pleasant shopping city.
