Rental Restrictions
To rent a car in Malta, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for at least 2 years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. The maximum rental age for rentals is 70 years.
Cars rented in Malta are not allowed to travel outside of the country.
Driving Restrictions
Traffic is on the left and passing on the right. The minimum driving age is 18 years. All passengers are required to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰. Breathalyser tests may be carried out at any time and drunk driving is severely punished.
There are parking metres on the major streets in Malta and you can park up to two hours at a time. Parking may be a problem in Malta due to a shortage of car parks. Illegally parked vehciles will be wheel-clamped or confiscated.

Mdina, described as the “Silent City”, is the oldest city in Malta, going back to the Pre-historic times. It is a great tourist destination recognised for its cultural heritage. It has a quiet and peaceful atmosphere in keeping with its glorious past. The town is known for its high narrow streets.
The best-preserved mediaeval building in the city is the Norman-style Palazzo Falzon. There is a beautiful main piazza in Mdina, with a Roman Catholic Cathedral. There is also a museum in the cathedral. If walking around in the city, you will notice numerous churches, palaces and fortifications. The Mdina suburb of Rabat is known for glassblowing, pottery and weaving.
