Rental Restrictions

To rent a car in Belgium, you must be at least 23 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

Cars rented in Belgium are not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia. Luxury cars are not allowed into Italy.

Driving Restrictions

In Belgium, traffic is on the right and passing on the left. The minimum driving age is 18 years. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰.

In order to sit in the front, children must be at least 12 years old; those under 12 must be seated in a safety seat.

When driving, headlights of your vehicle must be on between dusk and dawn and in poor weather conditions. You may only use the horn outside built-up areas.

Blue Zone parking areas for parking with discs are indicated by signs placed near them. However, where there are parking metres in the zones, the discs are not required. Outside the Blue Zones a parking disc must be used where indicated. Parking in the Blue Zone is usually allowed for up to 3 hours. Parking is forbidden within 15 metres of a tram, bus or train stop or where the tram or rail lines cross the road.

If you violate the traffic laws, the police are authorised to collect fines on the spot. If you refuse to pay, you must place a security deposit.

About Kortrijk
