Rental Restrictions

In order to rent a car, you must be at least 20 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 2 years. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.

Cars rented in Sweden are not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and the countries of the former Republic of Yugoslavia. Luxury cars are not allowed into Italy.

Driving Restrictions

In Sweden, traffic is on the right and passing on the left. The minimum driving age is 18 years. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.2‰. All passengers are required to use seatbelts and children under 7 should be restrained in an approved seat.

When driving, the headlights must always be on. In towns, you may only use the horn in cases of extreme and immediate danger. Outside cities, you should use the horn to indicate your intention to pass. Pedestrians are only allowed to cross streets at pedestrian crossings.

Most cities in Sweden have both metered on-street parking and timed ticket machines operating from 8 am to 6 pm. A yellow sign with a red line across its bottom means that parking in somehow restricted in the vicinity. Usually, cars are parked on the right side of the road. The fines for parking violations are remarkably high.
