About Kiel
The city of Kiel was founded in the 13 th century. It was heavily damaged during World War II and then rebuilt after that. Its central shopping and commercial district, the streets of which are only used by pedestrians, is a model of city planning. The older part of the city includes the Church of St. Nicholas and many cultural facilities. There are hardly any historic buildings in Kiel, but modern architecture flourishes in the city. One of the major sightseeing spots is the Kiel canal with its giant locks. Kiel has many museums, but the most interesting one is the open air museum of Schleswig-Holstein.
