Rental Restrictions

Cars rented in Hungary are not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yugoslavia.

Driving Restrictions

Traffic is on the right and passing on the left. The minimum driving age is 17 years. Children must be at least 16 to sit in the front. Infants and toddlers must be seated in a child seat in the back. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0‰. The use of seatbelts is compulsory for all passengers.

Trams and buses always have priority. Pedestrians have priority at marked pedestrian crossings and at intersections. You are only allowed to use the horn in case of extreme danger.

The police are authorised to collect fines on the spot. They also subject vehicles to on-the-spot checks in search for illegal residents in Hungary.

Outside urban areas, vehicles must use dimmed headlights even during daylight hours. Flashing the headlights often means that the driver yields.

Most of the main tourist areas have free parking. On two-way streets, you can park on the right side only; on one-way streets, you may park on both sides.
