About Gdansk
Gdansk owes its fortune to its seaside location: it used to be a port through which the larger part of Europe had been supplied with merchandise. Except for the industrial areas and the Langgarten, the modern part of Gdanks, the city has a mediaeval appearance and many narrow winding streets and gabled houses of carved stone.
There are many remarkable buildings in the city, the Church of Saint Mary is one of the most noteworthy. The cultural and educational institutions in Gdansk include the Polytechnical University and the University of Gdansk, music and art schools and a number of theatres.
