Cherbourg Car Rental Guide

This page provides you with information concerning car rental in Cherbourg airport, railway station and downtown. It also gives a short overview of the car rental and driving restrictions in France.

Driving Restrictions

The minimum driving age in France is 18 years. Children must be at least 10 to sit in the front seat. Those under 10 years must be seated in the rear and seatbelted or in a child seat. All passengers are required to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0,5‰.

A flashing red light means “Do not enter”; flashing amber means “Caution”; flashing yellow arrows mean “Yield”.

Broken centre lines on the road indicate a section where passing is allowed. Where three or five lanes exist, the middle one should be used for passing by traffic going both directions. A double-thick white line designates the mandatory slow lane.

Do not park where the curb is painted yellow. Parking on the left side of the street is allowed on one-way streets only. On darks streets, parking lights must be left on. Pay-and-display machines are widely used. Illegally parked vehicles may be wheel-clamped or towed.

About Cherbourg

Cherbourg in itself is not a tourist destination, it is more of a passenger port between France and England. Most of the attractions are around Cherbourg’s huge marina and park. During the summer, festivals are organised in the Plage Verte park. The portside has many of Cherboug’s best restaurants and pubs, while the nearby streets offer the best places for shopping. The city also hosts a theatre, a Museum of the Liberation and a maritime museum.
