Rental Restrictions

To rent a car in Italy, you must be at least 18 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Rented cars are not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and the countries of the former Republic of Yugoslavia.

Driving Restrictions

In Italy, traffic is on the right and passing on the left. The minimum age of a driver is 18 years. Children under 12 years of age must use a special restraint. It is compulsory for all passengers to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.8‰.

Headlights for vehicles are required from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise and also under bridges and in tunnels. Foglights should only be used in case of poor visibility. The use of the horn is only allowed in cases of extreme danger; at night, flash your lights instead. Outside built-up areas, the horn must be used to indicate the intention of passing. The middle lane of three or five-lane roads is used for passing.

Generally, vehicles are parked on the right side of the road.

The police are authorised to remove your driving license and to collect fines on the spot. In order to avoid car thefts, the police are increasingly organising vehicle checks, for which you have to present your vehicle’s documents as well as your own.

Bergamo is a beautiful old town on the edge of the Alps. Citta Alta is the historic part of the town and most of the historic buildings and interesting sights are located in that part. The modern Bergamo spreads over the plain below the old town.

At the centre of the town is the beautiful Piazza Vecchia, surrounded by a mixture of mediaeval and Renaissance architecture. There are many museums in Bergamo and one of the most important tourist attractions is the Accademia Carrara, located outside the town wall, containing works by many great Italian artists.
