Ancona Car Rental Guide

The current page gives you information about car rental in Ancona and also describes the main car rental and driving restrictions valid in Italy.

Rental Restrictions

To rent a car in Italy, you must be at least 18 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Rented cars are not allowed into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and the countries of the former Republic of Yugoslavia.

Driving Restrictions

In Italy, traffic is on the right and passing on the left. The minimum driving age is 18 years. Children under 12 years of age must use a special restraint. It is compulsory for all passengers to use seatbelts. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.8‰.

Headlights for vehicles must be on from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise and also under bridges and in tunnels. Foglights should only be used in case of poor visibility. The use of the horn is only allowed in cases of extreme danger; at night, you should flash your headlights instead. Outside built-up areas, the horn must be used to indicate the intention of passing. The middle lane of three or five-lane roads is used for passing.

Generally, vehicles are parked on the right side of the road.

The police are authorised to remove your driving license and to collect fines on the spot. In order to avoid car thefts, they are increasingly organising vehicle checks, for which you have to present your vehicle’s documents as well as your own. If you fail to present the documents, your car may be confiscated.

About Ancona

Ancona is the largest and capital city of Ancona Province and of Marche Region and a busy commercial and fishing port, located on the Adriatic coast. It is mostly known as a modern port, but there are several fascinating tourist attractions in the city as well, such as an art gallery and an archaeological museum. Just outside the town there are long stretches of beautiful beaches. It is the coastline of Ancona that makes the city a popular tourist destination.

Ancona was built on two hills that form an amphitheatre around the harbour. The finest church and most obvious landmark of the city is the Mediaeval Cathedral of San Ciriaco, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles.

The Le Marche region is known for its unspoilt beauty and excellent cuisine.
